Nazareth Orphanage faces its own set of challenges and obstacles while providing a safe haven for children in need. Let’s take a closer look at the hurdles they’ve encountered and how they are working tirelessly to overcome them.
Challenges Faced by Nazareth Orphanage
Nazareth Orphanage is spread across 7 hectares, complete with a security wall and one entrance gate. Just so you don’t have to pull out a calculator to know how much space there is, each hectare comprises 10,000 square meters, and there are 4,000 square meters to an acre.
The orphanage houses young boys between the ages of 4 and 12 years old, and a limited number of girls in temporary housing while the new dormitory is being built. While the number of children at the orphanage fluctuates, it averages around 50 young children. The caring presence of eight sisters from the order of the Sacred Heart and of the Poor is crucial for tending to the children.
With the ongoing “Girls Everywhere Matter” campaign, Nazareth Orphanage aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young girls. This fundraising initiative seeks to raise $250,000 to develop additional facilities, starting with a dormitory and dining facility. This phase of the project will be a crucial step in welcoming up to 50 young orphaned girls alongside the boys.
The orphanage operates on a monthly budget of approximately $3,000, sourced from financial donations, the sale of used clothing and furniture, charity bazaars/fairs, and building rentals for spiritual retreats. Importantly though, they do not receive direct financial support from the Mexican government. However, the children do receive free medical, dental, and academic education from the local community.
Support Needed and How You Can Help
The sisters continuously require supplies to ensure the well-being of the children. These critical supplies include laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper napkins, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, bathroom soap, canned goods, cereal, cookies, crackers, spaghetti, mac & cheese, mayonnaise, milk (preferably non-refrigerated, powder form), chocolate for milk, tuna (preferably in water), canned chicken, and peanut butter & jelly for sandwiches. If you can contribute any of these supplies, it will be greatly appreciated.
Throughout the year, there are also opportunities to come to Tecate and assist in more physical aspects of the orphanage, such as needed repairs, gardening, and more. These trips are announced regularly on this website with opportunities to sign up for specific jobs on those trips.
Community Involvement and Future Plans
Nazareth Orphanage thrives on community involvement, with a Tecate Board of Directors overseeing various aspects, including property management and large maintenance projects. The orphanage looks to rent portions of the new community center to local church and civic organizations in the Tecate area for additional income to support the growing number of children in need.
